In the framework of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, November 24th, a press conference was held in San Cristobal de Las Casas, “Rage Is Not Enough, We Want Justice: Violence against Girls, Adolescents and Women In Chiapas”, organized by the Tsatsal O’Tonal, Melel Xojobal CA Collective, Cereza Collective and the Higher Studies and Research Center in Social Anthropology (CIESAS).
The board was made up of representatives of the collectives, mothers of victims of feminicide and family members of women unjustly imprisoned. They denounced the lack of attention from the Chiapas justice system through multiple irregularities in investigation files, the institutional violence to which they have been subjected from the beginning and negligence and revictimization they suffer from the authorities and demanded that the State Prosecutor properly investigate the violent deaths of women and girls.
They also expressed concern about the aggravation of violence in Chiapas, noted that there have been 574 disappearances of children and adolescents so far this year, where girls and adolescent women represent 72% of the total. They mentioned that Tuxtla Gutierrez, San Cristobal de Las Casas, and Tapachula are the municipalities where the highest percentages are recorded with 43% of cases being indigenous girls and adolescents; that between 2011 and 2021, 70 girls and adolescents have been victims of feminicide and that in most cases families have not had access to fair trails and perpetrators remain unpunished.
For their part, relatives victims of institutional violence demanded to reach the truth of the facts in the cases of those who have been deprived of freedom and unjustly condemned.
Subsequently, on Friday, November 25th, the mothers of victims and collectives who participated in the press conference, joined the activities that were held in San Cristobal de Las Casas on the occasion of the commemoration of 25N and along with other collectives and civil society, once again raised their voices in their demand for justice and the need for the elimination of violence against women.
