Chiapas: More Displacement in Pantelho Due to Increase in Violence – Frayba

@Chiapas Paralelo

After Raquel Trujillo Morales announced that she would take office as municipal president on October 1st, civil and ecclesiastical organizations expressed their concern about the increase in violence that this may provoke in Pantelho.

The San Pedro Apostol parish, based in the municipality of Chenalho, expressed its concern regarding these rumors, as they could cause new displacements as inhabitants have pointed out that the mayor and his wife have links with criminal groups. It also warned that if this announcement is fulfilled “a spiral of violence will be unleashed, there will be more forced displacements, narco-blockades and clashes between armed groups in which innocent people are trapped with stray and/or directed bullets with the smell of death.”

The Fray Bartolome de Las Casas Center for Human Rights (Frayba) assured that new displacements have already occurred in the Pantelho area due to the increase in violence: “at least 90 people from the Nuevo Paraiso community, San Jose El Carmen and the municipal seat of the municipality of Pantelho; most of them women, girls, boys and adolescents and members of the Civil Society Organization Las Abejas de Acteal (Las Abejas de Acteal)” have had to leave their homes, “due to the political tension that exists in the municipality of Pantelhó”, the organization said.

For this reason, they join the call for peace of the Parish of San Pedro Apostol; and they demand from the Mexican government “the implementation of precautionary measures given the announcement of possible acts of violence that violate the security and personal integrity of the population in the Chiapas Highlands region.”

On another note, members of the 86 communities of Pantelho demonstrated in the state capital against the intentions of Raquel Trujillo to protest and said that they will not allow this to happen.
