Relatives of those who were detained and disappeared in the municipality of Atoyac de Álvarez during the “Dirty War” of the 1960’s and 1970’s have demanded that members of the Truth Commission (Comverdad) intervene to ask authorities to grant security to those who received payment for the reparation of damages on the part of the federal government, given that many of these have been threatened for the money they have received, this during an act in which the institution presented its first report into investigations in the city.

The presentation of the first report which was organized in Chilpancingo last Tuesday was attended by relatives of the disappeared, former guerrilla fighters, social activists, and directors of human-rights organizations, none of whom indicated who was directly responsible.  In an interview after the event, Enrique González Ruiz, president of Comverdad, assured that “we are pressuring the government so that it [provide security], but it should be understood that this is not the Public Ministry, nor a judge, but being that this is an organism created by the state, it has the capacity to request these types of measures.”

The coordination of the Guerrero Network of Civil Human-Rights Organizations (Redgroac), Manuel Olivares Hernández, assured that the dirty war has not ended, and that despite the established state of right, disappearances continue, as do extrajudicial executions and repression against social movements.  “If we do not want this to be repeated, all of this must change.”  In other news, the vice-president of the Association of Relatives of the Detained, Disappeared, and Victims of Human-Rights Violations in Mexico (Afadem), Tita Radilla Martínez, proposed that the members of Comverdad turn over the primary results of their investigations to the Federal Attorney General’s Office (PGR) so that this organization continue “as soon as possible” with investigations so as to present the whereabouts of their loved ones.
