Guerrero/National: Human Rights Defender Kenia Hernandez Held for Second Time

Kenia Hernandez (La jornada)

On October 19th, after 8:45 a.m., the human rights defender Kenia Hernandez, a member of the Zapata Vive collective, was arrested at the Amozoc toll booth, Puebla, by members of the Federal Police and the National Guard while they were conducting a search of the vehicle she was in. Those who were traveling with her testified that the agents beat them and took their belongings, as well as taking Kenia Hernandez with excessive violence, without an arrest warrant and without having previously identified themselves. The arrest would have been at the request of authorities of the State of Mexico.

It should be remembered that on June 6th, Kenia Hernandez and three minors, also members of the Zapata Vive collective, were detained in the State of Mexico by police officers from the State Security Secretariat and elements of the ministerial police. Hernandez was detained in Chiconautla prison, in the municipality of Ecatepec, accused of the crime of robbery with violence. All were later released, but although Hernandez left prison, the case continued.

Kenia Hernandez is a beneficiary of the Protection Mechanism for Defenders and Journalists.
