Guerrero/National: Remains of One of Ayotzinapa 43 Identified

@ La Octava

On June 15th, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) reported on the discovery of the University of Innsbruck, Austria, of the remains of another of the 43 student teachers from Ayotzinapa, Jhosivani Guerrero de la Cruz, who disappeared in Iguala in 2014,.

The head of the Investigation and Litigation Unit for the Ayotzinapa Case, Omar Gomez Trejo, accused the authorities of the then Attorney General’s Office (PGR) of “presenting insufficient information at that time to identify the student teacher.” According to Gomez Trejo, the then head of the PGR, Arely Gomez Gonzalez reported on the identification of Jhosivani by means of a mitochondrial DNA test, the results of which were only 17% consistent with the young man’s DNA. In addition, the remains allegedly showed “traces of direct thermal exposure to fire.”

However, another of the findings was that “this lumbar vertebra does not present any thermal alteration, that is, a high exposure to fire. The impacts presented by this indication were only erosion due to exposure to the elements, humidity and the earth”, said Omar Gomez.

These findings contrast with the so-called “historical truth” of the previous government and show the lie that was told to the families and to Mexico, said the ProDH Center. “Given the genetic identification of Jhosivani Guerrero de la Cruz, we embrace his family with solidarity and affection”, the organization said.

Also Section 22 of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE) expressed its repudiation of the crime committed against the young student: “With deep pain, but with absolute and generalized rage, from Oaxaca, city of resistance, we express our repudiation to the crime against humanity committed against Jhosivani Guerrero de la Cruz.”

On another note, the representative of the UNHCHR Mexico, Guillermo Fernandez Maldonado said that what was called “historical truth” “has no scientific basis and is contrary to international human rights standards” and stressed that it has been thanks to the families of the 43 students that “the identification of remains with dignity is possible”, which represents a hope for the families of more than 80 thousand people who have disappeared in the country.
